Now that fall is here, let the Halloween fun begin. It can be a day of fun for both the young and old alike. Halloween is also a holiday that is designed for parties. Spooky themes, fun costumes, and plenty of Halloween treats make it a good time for all ages.

History of Halloween

Halloween’s name is a shortening of All Hallows Eve, the day on which some believe all the bad spirits come out. Halloween was originally called All Hallows’ Eve, which means the evening before All Saints’ Day. Hallow is an Old English word for saint. This was shortened to Hallowe’en and finally to Halloween.

Halloween started out as a Celtic holiday known as Samhain, which celebrated the end of summer. The Celts believed that on the night of Samhain, the souls of the dead would come back to visit the living. Along with them, dark spirits like goblins and witches would also come out. Hence, fires would be lit to keep these dark spirits away. The Celts would dress in masks and costumes as part of the festivities. Also, food and lanterns were often left out as gifts for the dead.

Over time, these customs turned into the Halloween fun festivities that we know and enjoy today.
