Quotes About Mothers

It is almost May, Spring is in the air and Mother’s Day is coming upon us once again. I thought it would be a good time to collect some of my favorite quotes about mothers.

Since Mother’s Day is the perfect time for us to do some reflection about our mothers, what better way to do that than reading some beautiful quotes about mothers from some famous people.quotes about mothers

But, before I begin, do you know the origin of Mother’s Day and why we celebrate it as a national holiday?

Origin of Mother’s Day

The first Mother’s Day in the United States was held in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a ceremony to honor her mother. Anna’s mission was to honor her own mother by continuing the work she had started to set aside a day to honor mothers. Anna successfully campaigned for a formal holiday to honor mothers, and by 1911 most states had taken up the idea. This was followed in 1914 by a declaration by President Woodrow Wilson that Mother’s Day should be celebrated as a national holiday on the second Sunday in May.

The commercialization of Mother’s Day quickly followed. Ironically, Anna Jarvis campaigned for many years against the commercialization of Mother’s Day. Anna had wanted Mother’s Day to be a day of sentiment, not profit.

Today, just like many other holidays, Mother’s Day is very commercial. Most of us like to show our appreciation by giving our mothers flowers and gifts. After all, it makes our mothers feel good to be honored, and we feel good being able to show our mothers how much they means to us.

But, I also think we need to celebrate this wonderful recognition of our mothers by keeping in mind its true meaning. It’s easy to do that just by reading some quotes about mothers from some well known people.

Here are just a few of my favorite quotes about mothers that ring true. And it only seem fitting that I start with a quote from Anna Jarvis herself!green line divider
